cooks edlerflower...

starter bottle of yeast was working so I pitched in the yeast and
4-5tsp nutrient before heading off to cornwall...nice the weathers just
changed...

so all the top priority tasks for the week complete

1) make wine
2) hide fishing kit in bongo

we're off....will report back in 1 week !

Re: Elderflower !

found some ;-) Added 4tsp tannin (1 less than the recipe but let's see).
Got just about enough nutrient so have started a starter bottle of yeast
to see if it's working still (about 3 years out of date)..then I'll add
the nutrient to the must and the yeast tomorrow if all going well.
Initial SG of the sugar mix was 1.13 (so it'll be a little higher when
the raisins and lemon are steeped...high, but shouldn't be higher than
my previous batch a couple of years back which was sweet but great).

Elderflower !

boys, the elderflower is coming out and I managed to collect some
yesterday on the way back from ballet (I had to hitch my tutu up to
reach some of it but managed to get enough to hopefully scrape a decent
few bottles).

before I lose my thoughts...

boilder up 18L of Water and added 7 KG of granulated to make around
23-25L of liquid which I poured straight into my industrial wine
fermentor ;-)
Into a new 'large' straining bag from the lady boy shop I added
2.5Pints of elder flowers (stripped from their stalks using a fork) - I
needed another pint ideally but they're not fully out so had to make do.
2.270Kg raisins Chopped
Rind of 5 lemons without the pith
Juice of 5 lemons squeezed into the bag whilst it was sitting in a bowl
to catch the run off and to catch any pips in the bag. Remainder is
thrown away.

Tied the bag, fed it into the fermenter suspended about 1/2 way in with
some nylon, and poured the juice run off in.

I need to add 5tsp tannin, nutrient and yeast.

anyone got any white wine yeast kicking around ? we're off in the camper
tomorrow night and I'm in a bit of a rush !

took me about an hour to put this all together (plus say 30 mins picking
the elderflower).

Orange Wine - Bottled and Sampled...

Bottled the orange wine today.... Lots of potential and only 60p a bottle to make. I'm going to do a larger batch. 30 bottles on the go next.

who needs heat mats, brew belts and demijohn jumpers !

The two demijohns of warren branded cider are fermenting in my courtyard shed ! Just been out there to get some orange juice and thought I heard a plop...sure enough, bubbles rising in both....Tested to the temperature of the orange juice I brought back in and it's 10c so go figure !

Fairly sure I added campden to each of those demijohns, and given it's 10 degrees out there who knows what's going on !

Meanwhile, the cook branded fizzy cider that was nice and clear is now sitting very cloudy having added campden to stop it fermenting any further..

so more waiting.......
